History:-
The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) was started in 1946 with Diploma Programs in Civil Engineering in a room under a thatched roof in Lakshmipuram.The first batch consisted of 86 students. Later, the classes were held in a shed in the nearby Sharada Vilas High School campus, in Mysore. S. Ramaswamy, D. V. Narasimha Rao and T. Ramarao,(“Tunnel” Ramarao), the founders, established NIE by 1950 with its own class rooms and workshops on a 6-acre (24,000 m2) campus, which was inaugurated by the then Vice .
NIE started AMIE courses in Civil Engineering for intermediate – passed students in 1948. The students were permitted to change over to the regular degree course leading to B. E. Degree in Civil Engineering of the University of Mysore. Thus, NIE became the second engineering college in the state of Karnataka and the first in Mysore. The first batch of students in Civil Engineering graduated in 1953 from NIE.
In 1956, NIE was recognised for development during the second and subsequent five-year plans by the State and the Union Government. In 1958-59, NIE got private-aided institution status under grant-in-aid code of the Karnataka government. A Golden Jubilee Complex was completed in 1996 on a 6-acre (24,000 m2) plot opposite the main building in part of the golden jubilee celbrations. In 2004, the college received World Bank aid under the TEQIP project. In 2007, NIE attained autonomy under Visvesvaraya Technological University.

The institute is located on Manandwadi Road, Mysore.
The NIE Quadrangle houses the administrative offices, libraries, a gymnasium, department offices, laboratories, bank, Centre for Appropriate Rural Technology, workshops and a High Voltage Laboratory.
The Golden Jubilee Complex, operational since 2000, located in a lush green campus, houses the Golden Jubilee building, a canteen and a playground area.
GENERAL FACILITIES:-
Situated about 5 Km from both Mysore City Railway Station and City Bus Station, the NIE Campus provides a full range of social and intellectual activities aided by facilities from libraries, lecture and seminar halls to students. Amenities and an impressive stage. There is a spirit of “oneness” among the staff and students, who come from different parts of India, and the concepts of NI.E. family is advocated.
Hostel:-
NIE provides separate hostel accommodation with mess facility for both boys and girls. The hostel for boys is situated behind the NIE Campus and it commands a strength of 280 inmates. The hostel for girls with 60 inmates is at a distance of about one km from the Institute.
The hostels are equipped with solar water heaters for round-the-clock hot water supply. Television set and facilities for a few indoor games have been provided.
BANK FACILITY:-
The Extension Counter of the Syndicate Bank, a Nationalised Bank, is situated within the campus and it offers banking services to staff and students of the Institute.
HEALTH CENTRE:-
In order to cater to the medical needs of the entire NIE family, a health centre has been set up in the Golden Jubilee Block. A lady and a male doctor are available for consultation during office hours.
NATIONAL CADET CORPS (NCC):-
Any student of the Institute can enroll for NCC, which has 1 KAR ENGR COY NCC UNIT that provides normal military and technical training. The engineering cadets are taught Field Craft, Bridging, Construction of Roads, Air Fields, Helipads, Water Supply Techniques, to deal with IEDs, Mines, Explosives, etc., apart from Watermanship, Map Reading, Leadership Qualities, Role of Engineers During War, Peace, Natural Calamities is also stressed. The “C” certificate holders with “A” Grade will be eligible to join army directly. There are placement opportunities in Police, BSF and other Paramilitary forces.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS):-
The NSS Unit of our college (NIE) has a sanctioned strength of 100. A student of any branch of our college can enroll for the unit. The period of enrollment is 2 years. After two years fresh students can enroll.
The Society and nature have given us a lot of things to our lives. In turn, an individual can also give to the society and nature. In this regard, an opportunity is given to the NSS Volunteers to do a bit in this direction. The NSS activities for the student volunteers involve social activities, like Blood Donation Camps, Tree Plantation, General Health Awareness, Eradication of Drug House, AIDS Awareness programmes, Slum eradication, Removal of illiteracy, Construction of small roads, Water Tanks, etc., in villages adopted by college NSS Unit and in the city.
