Kasturba Medical College-KMC Manipal was founded on June 30, 1953. College started with only the pre-clinical department at Manipal, as the students had to go to Mangalore for their clinical training. In the year of 1969, when the clinical program started in Manipal, KMC became a full-fledged independent college. Students from 44 countries have graduated from the college, and its degrees are recognized worldwide.
Kasturba Medical College Manipal was approved recognition by the Medical Council of India. Recognition by the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council shortly followed. Now, Manipal University (of which KMC is a constituent college) degrees are recognized in all countries.
Kasturba Medical College-KMC Manipal, physical facilities for research work and student services have steadily developed over. Kasturba Medical College is situated in the rocky hinterland of the Malabar Coast of southwest India, about 8 km (5 mi) from the Arabian Sea. From its locality on a plateau, it commands a dazzling view of the Arabian Sea to the west and the Western Ghats range to the east. The 200-acre campus provides one of the excellent environments for study in south Asia. It is located a few KMs from the temple city of Udupi, and is 60 km (37 mi) north of Mangalore.
Parkala is one of its residential areas. Manipal was formerly under Shivalli village panchayat. The name is derived from manipalla angliced to Manipal. In Tulu Language Palla means stream. Kasturba Medical College, climate is humid, warm between November and May, and wet, & cool during the monsoon months from June to October. Manipal, being located on an elevated place near the seaside, has fine breeze throughout the day and the temperature ranges from 24 ° C to 38 ° C for most part of the year.
KMC Manipal is one of the few colleges all over the country that comes to mind the moment a student desires to practice medical education. KMC Manipal is the Flagship College of Manipal University.

|SMIMS offers a 4 ½ years MBBS course as per curriculum prescribed and recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). This course carries the educational and technical excellence, which is a hallmark of all Manipal Group organizations. During the course, students are trained in theoretical and practical aspects of basic, pre- and para-clinical subjects and receive state of the art training from fully equipped and staffed medical college and teaching hospital. The teaching hospital is a tertiary care center serving people of Sikkim and North East India, in general and offers excellent scope for hands on clinical training. The teaching staff are experienced and trained in newer teaching, learning methods. SMIMS has adopted policy of constantly evolving and updating teaching, learning systems in keeping with MCI regulations from time to time. Thus, the students are exposed to novel learning environments facilitating better learning. For example, students get exposure to seminar presentations developing communication skills, participating in integrated teaching sessions and exposure to patient care in community setting and participation in short term research projects. The objective of training is not only to prepare the students to be responsible members of the community, but also to prepare them for higher education and training in India and abroad. The method of teaching is fully geared to achieve these objectives. SMIMS has also a scheme of teacher- guardian support system, which ensures that each student receives individualized academic and psychological support and career related counseling from members of the faculty during the entire study period. Thus, students pursuing MBBS at SMIMS not only undergo rigorous technical training, but also receive support to become good individuals and responsible citizens of the country.

These applicants have to appear at the entrance test conducted by Government of Sikkim. However, such Sikkimese candidates who also wish to be considered in the General or North East category will have to apply and appear Entrance Examination.
Three seats are reserved for wards of active defence personnel posted in Sikkim as on 1.1.2011. The concerned defence personnel must be borne on strength of a military unit located in Sikkim as on 1.1.2011. Admissions are made on the basis of rank obtained in the Entrance Examination.

North East Category
Thirty seats are reserved for candidates resident in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur and Sikkim. Domicile/permanent residence certificate from the appropriate authority in respect of parent of the applicant is essential for consideration in this category. Admissions are made on the basis of rank obtained in the Entrance Examination.
Thirtytwo seats are available in this category. Admissions are based on merit obtained in the Entrance Examination.
NRI/NRI Sponsored/International Category
Fifteen seats are available under this category. Candidates are required to apply separately and admission will be given after screening conducted by SMU. The date of screening will be intimated after receipt of application. If the candidate himself/herself is not an NRI, then he/she may be sponsored by his/her father, mother, brother, sister, uncle or aunt, grandparent. For eligibility under this category the applicant must have obtained 50% marks in the last qualifying examination (10+2 or equivalent). For the purpose of percentage of marks in the qualifying examination candidates qualifying from Foreign Universities are required to submit the equivalent grading/percentage of marks from AIU (Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi), address of which is given subsequently.

Candidates applying from abroad are requested to send an application along with demand draft of US $50 in favour of SMU, payable at Gangtok.
In addition, all parents/guardians of NRI/NRI sponsored candidates are to produce a bank guarantee for tuition fees for the first year duration of course at the time of admission. In case bank guarantee cannot be produced at the time of admission, the admission will be provisional. The said bank guarantee will have to be produced within one month from the date of admission failing which admission will be cancelled.
Format of Sponsorship Letter:
I, Mr./Mrs. __(name of sponsor)____ a resident of __(complete address abroad with country of residence)__ hereby sponsor Mr./Ms. __(name of candidate)__ who is my __(mention correct relationship)__. I also undertake to bear the cost of tuition fees of the candidate for the entire course.
A photocopy of my proof of residence (copy of passport/certificate of residence from appropriate authority in case of citizens of Nepal/Bhutan) is also enclosed.
